This Freedom Trail marker commemorates Civil Rights activist James Meredith, who was shot in Hernando, MS June 6, 1966\. Meredith was leading the March Against Fear to encourage African Americans to exercise their voting rights when he was shot and nearly died. After he was treated for his wounds, he joined Dr. M. L. King and others in Jackson, MS. The marker is located near the spot where Meredith was shot, located in front of the VFW on Highway 51 South.
